Getting started

How do I add a receipt?

Tap Camera to scan one, or Library to import photos you've already taken. You can select many photos at once. Taxsy works through them one at a time and shows the progress.

There's also Manual if you have no receipt and just need to record a cost.

Why does it ask what my line of work is?

Only to give you a sensible starting set of expense categories. A builder and a photographer don't track the same things. You can add, reorder or remove any of them afterwards in Settings → Categories, and pull in another trade's starter set at any time.

The scan got something wrong. Can I fix it?

Yes. Every field is editable before you save, and afterwards by tapping the receipt in History. Reading a photo is never perfect, particularly on creased or faded till receipts, so it's worth a glance before saving.

If the line items don't add up to the printed total, Taxsy tells you and always keeps the printed total as the amount saved.

Everyday use

Part of this receipt was personal. What do I do?

If Taxsy picked out the individual items, untick the personal ones in the Items section, and their prices come off the receipt total as you go. You can also just type the correct amount over the total.

I bought something abroad. Which exchange rate is used?

Taxsy uses HMRC's officially published monthly exchange rate for the month the receipt is dated, and shows you the rate it applied. You can override it if you need a different one.

Rates are downloaded once per month and cached, so it keeps working offline afterwards.

It says a receipt might be a duplicate.

Taxsy flags a scan when the merchant, amount and date match something already saved. If it's genuinely a separate purchase, choose Save Anyway. If it is a duplicate, choose Discard.

Can I add my own categories?

Yes. In Settings → Categories you can add, reorder and remove any category, including the ones Taxsy set up for you. Removing a category moves its receipts to Miscellaneous rather than deleting them.

Exporting and records

What do I actually get when I export?

A ZIP containing a standard CSV of your receipts plus all of the receipt images. The CSV opens in Excel, Numbers, Google Sheets or any accounting package, and the images are there for your records.

Export from Settings → Export Records, choosing a full tax year, a calendar year, or an MTD quarter.

Does Taxsy support Making Tax Digital?

It produces the records: choose MTD Quarter when exporting and you get that quarter's receipts, with the filing deadline shown. Both the standard quarters (6th to 5th) and the calendar-quarters election are supported.

Taxsy doesn't submit anything to HMRC itself. You or your accountant file using your usual MTD software.

Does Taxsy do my tax return?

No. Taxsy keeps your expense records in order and hands them over in a format your accountant or accounting software can use. It doesn't file with HMRC and it isn't tax advice.

Where is my data stored, and how do I get it out?

On your device and in your own iCloud account, syncing between your iPhone and iPad. Nothing is stored on our servers, and there's no account to sign up for.

You're never locked in: export at any time and you have everything as a plain CSV plus the original images.

The export seems to take a while.

A big year with hundreds of photos takes a few seconds to gather and compress. You'll see the progress while it works. Keep Taxsy in the foreground until the share sheet appears.

Billing and account

Is there a subscription?

No. Taxsy is a single purchase with no subscription, no upsells and no adverts, and there's no limit on how many receipts you can scan.

I bought it before — do I pay again on a new phone?

No. Purchases are tied to your Apple Account, so signing in with the same one restores it on any of your devices.

How do I request a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple, not by me. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in and choose the purchase. If something's wrong with the app, do email me first — I'd rather fix it.

Can I use my own AI key?

Yes, if you'd prefer. In Settings → AI Scanner you can enter your own Google Gemini API key, and scans will go directly from your device to Google using it instead of through Taxsy's service. Leave it blank and everything just works.

Still stuck?

Email support with your device model, iOS version and what happened. Screenshots help enormously. I aim to reply within two working days.
